This article aims to provide a comprehensive style guide for all Hytale Wiki articles to follow. Although Wikipedia already provides a more general style guide, a more specific one is necessary for Hytale-specific guidelines. As such, only guidelines pertaining to the Hytale Wiki and its basic formatting rules should be included here.

Notability

Articles are only allowed in the main namespace (the "mainspace") if they fit the following criteria. Articles which do not fit the following criteria may be deleted.

  1. Articles must be longer than a few sentences. Articles which do not meet this criteria should be merged into related articles.
  2. Articles must be directly related to Hytale in some way.
  3. Articles about people are only allowed if they have a part in making Hytale.

Redirects

Redirects are exempt from the normal notability, but must redirect to an article that fits the notability guidelines. The following lists what is allowed:

  1. Alternative spellings (Armour→Armor)
    1. Excludes incorrect spelling, typos, and irregular formatting.
  2. Shortened names (Simon→Simon Collins-Laflamme, HMM→Hytale Model Maker)
  3. Plural form, but only if the target page is commonly used as a plural noun (Kweebecs→Kweebec, as they are usually referred to as a group, but not Cobblestones→Cobblestone)

Redirects in the user namespace may lead anywhere, except to article that does not exist or another redirect.

Titles

All article names and headings should:

  1. Use sentence case, but capitalize proper nouns.
    1. For example, List of factions in Hytale, not List Of Factions In Hytale.
  2. Not contain superfluous articles (don't contain a or the) or self-references (Their appearance).
  3. Be singular (Kweebec not Kweebecs).

Layout

All pages should be consistently laid out.

Generic layout

  1. Notice templates (amboxes like {{stub}} or {{split}})
  2. Infobox (using an infobox template)
  3. Dablinks ({{about}}, etc)
  4. Lead
    • An opening description of the subject, summarising the page's contents, with the first instance of the page title in bold.
  5. Sections:
    1. ...
      • Specific sections relating to the subject. Will differ between pages.
    2. History
      • Using the {{History}} template, shows the history of the subject, documenting changes between versions.
    3. Trivia
      • Any other useful information that doesn't fit into the other sections.
    4. Gallery
      • Images relating to the subject, inside <gallery> tags.
    5. References
      • Lists references to verify the information on the page – should contain just {{reflist}}.
    6. See also
      • Similar articles to the page topic.
  6. Navigation template(s).
    • The most relevant topics to the page. If a page uses a navigation template, that page should usually be linked from the template, and vice versa.
  7. Categories
    • Are usually automatically added by the infobox and navigation templates.
  8. Interwikis
    • Links to other language wikis, eg [[de:NPC]].

Creatures

  1. Sections:
    1. Types
      • Describes different variations or types of the creature.
    2. Habitat
      • Describes the habitat or location where the creature lives. Include alterverse and zone.
    3. Behavior
      • Describes how the creature acts and behaves in-game.
    4. Appearance
      • Describes what the creature looks like, and what it wears and wields.
    5. Life cycle
      • The creature may differ as it grows older. List the changes here.
    6. Backstory
      • Describes the story line of the creature that took place prior to the events in Hytale.

Other articles

Since the game is not out yet not all information is known about the subjects of pages, but please use your best judgement when laying out articles. Place the most important information nearer to the top for readers to find more easily.

Writing

The Hytale Wiki's purpose is to document facts about the game, so articles should avoid speculation and unsourced information.

If information is obvious or can be found in-game, it does not need a reference, but if it is a quote, relation to a real-world object, or some other lesser known fact that a citation should be added. If a feature is mentioned to be added in an upcoming update, it must be adequately sourced.

Articles in the mainspace should always be written in third-person and without terms referring to the reader. Also avoid abbreviations or contractions.

When emphasis is needed, italics (using wikimarkup; ''italic text'') should be used, not boldface or CAPITALS.

Tutorial information should only be within tutorial articles as sub-pages of Tutorials. Tutorials may be linked from other articles if relevant.

Information relating to mods should not be contained on articles relating to the base game. Mods should also not be linked from articles not about mods.

Currency

Articles should always include the latest information. If something is changed in an update, it should be put in the History section and otherwise removed.
