Hypixel (fully the Hypixel Network) is the biggest Minecraft: Java Edition multiplayer server, run by Hypixel Inc. Hypixel features dozens of different minigames on its server which cover many different play styles.

History[edit | edit source]

Hypixel is the most popular multiplayer server for Minecraft: Java Edition, released in beta on 13 April 2013 by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette.[1] The two originally created custom Minecraft adventure maps and uploaded them to their YouTube channel before creating the Hypixel server to showcase their creations. They then created small minigames for users to play while waiting to join the main adventure maps;[2] the first of which being Paintball. Many more minigames were created after many players started joining the server.[3]

On 28 October 2015, Hypixel released a Minecraft: Pocket Edition server in alpha which was developed under the codename "Bladestorm".[4] The server reached over 6 million registered accounts and 20 thousand concurrent users before being shut down on 31 March 2016.[5]

On 21 May 2017, Hypixel announced that they had partnered with NetEase, the publishers of Minecraft China, to release a version of Hypixel for the game in China.[6] On 13 April 2020, it was announced that Hypixel's Minecraft China server would be shutting down on 30 June 2020.[7]

Hypixel has used DDoS protection software Cloudflare Spectrum since April 2018 after being the victim of DDoS attacks.[8]

Minigames[edit | edit source]

Hypixel offers 43 different minigames, the most popular of which are SkyWars and BedWars. The server also features beta games in its prototype lobby where players can vote on which games they would like to see fully released.

The Hypixel server has been recreated in Hytale and features many of the same minigames, including SkyWars, BedWars, Survival Games, Build Battle, and more.

Statistics[edit | edit source]

The server attracts around two million players each month.[9] Hypixel reached 10 million unique players in total in December 2016,[10] 15 million on 18 May 2019,[11] and 18 million on 7 April 2020, which is roughly half of all Java Edition players.[12] On 9 April 2020, Hypixel reached its highest concurrent player count, with over 100,000 players on the server at once.[13]

Hypixel holds four Guinness World Records as of August 2017;[14] however, these figures are now outdated.
